What would you like to work on today?
“This blog, actually.”
Go on.
“I want to see if I’m doing with it what I intended to do with it.”
What are three things you intended to do with it?
“Have some sort of a professional presence, something that might come up other than boxing when someone googles my name. Attract future clients – in the sense of giving prospective clients some idea of what sorts of thoughts their coach entertains. And share ideas in short, quirky bursts.”
You seem most animated about the second.
“Do I?”
I detect a certain concern round the idea of attracting clients.
“Yes, that’s fair.”
What is it about attracting clients that brings anxiety?
“That there’s no way to do it without becoming somehow slimey, salesy, gamey. That if I’m paying all this money to become a coach, I need to have a coherent strategy for monotizing these new skills.”
When you imagine yourself coaching three years from now, what do you see?
“A large window. A calendar filled with clients. A sense of tranquility.”
What about wealth?
“No. I don’t see that at all.”
What would please you more: Fifty monthly clients paying a reasonably small amount for coaching, or two clients paying a large amount for weekly sessions?
“The fifty. Definitely, the fifty clients.”
Tell me more.
“I want to coach as often and widely as possible. I want to coach young professionals, creative types, parents just trying to figure out work-life balance.”
What do you feel when you think about these types of clients?
“Authenticity.”
What affect does that have on this blog?
“The minimalist theme, certainly. I think of black-and-white photography as revealing everything, hiding nothing with loud splashes of distracting color. The topics I choose, too.”
How so?
“Subjects I haven’t expertise about. I want to share myself making discoveries.”
What is a good timeframe for knowing if this blog is doing what you want it to do – provide a professional presence, attract clients, and share ideas?
“Six months strikes me as a good number.”
What are three things you can do to pursue your vision until, let’s see, February 2020?
“Continue creating regular content, continue seeking feedback, continue coaching as often as possible.”
