“I don’t know much about meditation, but some of my friends do yoga that seems like mostly breathing.”
What is it called?
“Something Tantra.”
Kundalini Tantra?
“I guess.”
I began a daily meditation practice in April 2014 at a time of unsurpassed anxiety, a stomach dipped oftenly in acid. Here’s what I noticed immediately: Five minutes with a guided meditation from The Mindfulness App brought 30 minutes of tranquility.
Within a year, my five-minute daily practice grew to a 90-minute daily practice that became an exploration of consciousness and time (no enlightenment, alas).
Then I began a nine-month exploration of Kundalini Tantra Yoga. Some sessions required 70 minutes, while others required twice that.
Kundalini moves the needle – I don’t recall who wrote that, but it’s true. Your life changes with Kundalini Tantra Yoga, though subtly. You don’t change yourself with it – in the transitive sense – but you do get changed by it.
“One of my friends said it’s almost orgasmic.”
Yes, it can be, that’s true. Particularly when you breathe through Muladhara Chakra. When you begin, you can’t believe the immense sensation that comes of exhaling. As you progress, though, it becomes the inhalation that induces it.
As you grow through the chakras, the sensation loses its sexual thrill. Breathing induces a sensation best defined as replenishing.
“What about Karma Yoga?”
A different sense of replenishment. A subject for a different day.
