“I have so many ideas, all these shiny objects, but I just don’t know if any of them is my calling.”
There’s a good saying someone wise once conjured for young writers: If anything can stop you from writing, let it . . .
To succeed at any artform requires compulsion, and if you can imagine yourself not-doing an artform, probably it is not your calling (or in some cases, not your calling anymore).
That’s the bad news. The good news is that living well doesn’t require compulsion, as very few of us are stamped ARTIST, and even those of us who are often outgrow it – despite our intentions.
What helps in choosing one’s artform, though, helps in choosing one’s calling. Something like: Is this easy for me to do? am I energized by its doing? am I able to do it after I’m bored?
The middle inquiry is my favorite these last few years.
When we do a thing we’re intended to do, we buzz when we finish.
